Dog at shelter

I was reading a scientific study today on behavioral reasons that dogs and cats are given up to animal shelters (see references below). I spend a significant amount of time reading the scientific literature relating to animal behavior. But this one, just made me sad. Every behavior problems listed for the dogs and cats given up was a potentially treatable problem.

Is your pet’s behavior problem treatable?

More than likely it is.

I can’t say that with absolute certainty because I don’t know you and I don’t know your pet. But I do believe that most behavior problems can be managed to the satisfaction of the owner and the pet.

According to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior the leading cause of death for dogs under three years of age is euthanasia for behavior problems, not infectious diseases. I would guess that the number would be similar for cats as well.

In this particular study, the behavior problems for which the dogs and cats were given up included the following:

  1. Aggression
  2. Separation Anxiety
  3. House Soiling
  4. Fearful Behavior
  5. Destructiveness
  6. Vocalization
  7. Disobedience
  8. Digging
  9. Chewing

All of the above problem behaviors are potentially treatable when working with a knowledgeable and experienced behaviorist or trainer. As a behaviorist I have worked extensively with local animal shelters and rescue groups and I have seen first hand the wonderful pets that shelter dogs and cats can become when they are given a second chance.

If your dog or cat has a behavior problem I encourage you to contact a behaviorist or trainer to work through the issue. Contact us today to set up your complimentary 15 minute telephone consultation.
