Dog Training - Jan 2009

If your anything like me, your schedule is packed full and if you tried to add anything else into it your head would explode all over the place. For me, I run my own business, I’m engaged and planning a wedding, I’m applying to graduate school, plus I’m a friend, daughter, sister, aunt,  fiance, etc.

On top of that I have a 5 month old puppy that needs to learn basic household manners. I’m here to tell you that it really is possible to have a well trained dog without having to carve significant time out of your schedule each day.

You can train your dog in 10 minutes a day.

In fact I’m going to be telling you how as I take Rusty through his training program. Each week I’m going to have a new lesson up here for you and your dog with video. The lessons will be specifically designed to be carried out in 10 minutes a day – 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the evening. These lessons will be available on the blog Monday of each week and lesson one starts 1/04/10. Tools that you will need to get started include a clicker (available at most pet supply stores) and treats to reward your dog with. A treat bag to hold your treats can be helpful as well if you don’t have pockets. If your dog isn’t motivated by food you’ll want to have some of his favorite toys with you. This is a great way for your to teach your dog new commands and reinforce the commands he already knows.

Additionally, between now and the start of the training program I want you to pay attention to what your dogs favorite things are. Does your dog just love a particular treat or have a favorite toy. In order to train your dog you need to know what motivates him. Experiment this week with different treats and toys to find out what your dog loves the most. Those are the things you will want to have available when training begins.

Is your dog unruly and you need help getting the situation under control? If so, contact us today to set up your complimentary 15 minute telephone consultation.
